Maciej Bekas has taken victory in the second round of the World SimSports GT3 Europe Championship Powered by NRT Game servers. In a race which saw an immense amount of action throughout the field, Bekas took the lead on the first lap from third on the grid. He held onto his lead for the rest of the race, other than a brief swap with the Aston Martin of Rapid Racing’s Michal Nizio during the pit swap phase. Nizio was clearly irritated by a small mistake in fueling after the race and noted that he felt he lost six or seven seconds by putting too much fuel into the car. The two polish drivers are clearly now on course for a racing rivalry. Nevertheless, the no-show from LMP-ANBU’s Alexis Clapano means that Nizio now enjoys a seventeen-point lead over Team RSI’s Daniele Vidimari and HME Amsterdam’s Harris Muhammad.
Further back in the field there were battles throughout, with notable performances from Team WSS’s own Dave Plummer who finished fourteen spots higher than his qualifying result in tenth. Plummer was elated after the race, hailing Alexander Meshkov and Mada Andhika for the battles throughout. Mad Hawk’s Lucas Lichten had a good race, rising seven places from qualifying to finish in ninth. In general, the strategy for most cars was to one-stop on medium tyres. Most drivers were positive after the race, although the stewards are currently looking into some incidents.
The championship standings now reflect Nizio’s consistent speed across the two events so far. Bekas will have to repeat his win if he is to catch Nizio, although the Rapid Racing driver will be looking at the speed of Vidimari and Muhammad at Watkins Glen next weekend. Elsewhere in the standing’s rivalries are being formed with many drivers on the same number of points. This championship will near the half-way point at the next event, but with so many points still available, no one can be comfortable at the moment!
